The theater was inaugurated in 1890 with the representation of Norma, the most famous work of the Catania composer Vincenzo Bellini, who died prematurely in 1835.
The hall with four tiers of boxes and the gallery have sumptuous decorations; the Bellinian works are also celebrated in the ceiling frescoes.
